DRY EYE IS A DISEASE!
Proper diagnosis is the first step toward relief.

Dry Eye is one of the most under-diagnosed ocular diseases, but it is the most common reason why patients see an eye care professional.
Dry Eye is a multifactorial disease of the tears and ocular surface that results in discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by changes in the normal tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface.

In fact, Dry Eye disease occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or produce poor quality tears. That's why it's essential you get your tears analyzed by your eye doctor. Only an eye doctor can properly diagnose your problem and treat it appropriately.

With each blink, tears spread across the cornea (front surface of the eye) providing lubrication, reduced risk of eye infection and removing foreign material. Excess tears drain into small drainage ducts in the inner corners of the eyelids. Dry Eyes can occur when the tear production and drainage is not in balance.

Untreated Dry Eye can lead to other complications
including loss of sight, so delaying
treatment is not recommended.

Over 80% of dry eye issues start with issues at the eyelid margin. The bacteria, oil residue, dirt and dead skin at the eyelids can cause the eyes to water, itch, burn, and make the eyes feel dry.

Zocular Eyelid System Treatment (ZEST) for Dry Eye
ZEST is an in-office lid cleaning and debridement system using a natural okra-based gel. The procedure is quick and painless, bringing immediate relief to symptoms of irritation and dry eye.

Zest (Zocular Eyelid System Treatment) works by gently exfoliating the eyelids to restore the natural state of the eyelids. By cleaning the eyelid margins which opens up the meibomian gland, it helps release oils into the eye that are required for a healthy tear film and reduce symptoms of dry eye.

After the in office treatment, we recommend gentle and effective home treatments to clean and keep the bacteria away from the lids that are anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Eye hygiene includes keeping the eyelids, eyelid margin and lashes clean. Dirt and debris on the edges of your eyelids can lead to symptoms of itching, burning and gritty eyes.

With every blink, dirt and debris may enter the tear film and coat the eye, leading to redness and irritation.

Poor eye hygiene can lead to demodex mites in the hair follicles. Demodex can exacerbate inflammation by blocking the oil glands at the base of your eyelashes. ZEST is an effective treatment for killing demodex mites, removing dirt, debris and relieving inflammation.

ZEST is an acronym that stands for Zocular Eyelid System Treatment. The procedure focuses on cleansing the eyelids to provide effective treatment. Known as an eyelid debridement procedure, this simple, painless process exfoliates the eyelids and opens up the meibomian gland, thereby allowing oils to be released into the eye to promote healthy tear production and lessen dry eye symptoms.

The ZEST procedure incorporates Zocular’s use of okra to address the root cause of dry eye symptoms. The polysaccharides in okra plants are used in a special mixture to clean the eyelids, targeting the oily residue, bacteria and dirt that are often at the root of itchy, dry eyes. After you undergo the ZEST treatment, Dr. Bohonos will be able to recommend ways to keep your eyelids clean in order to stave off future dry eye problems.
